Our self-esteem has everything to do with how we perceive ourselves; how we perceive ourselves is influenced by how we look. When the color of our teeth makes us embarrassed to smile, it is probably time to get our teeth whitened, or bleached. Teeth whitening can turn your embarrassment into pride.
Teeth darken as one ages because substances get into the microcracks of the enamel, and this causes discoloration. These substances can be coffee, tea, berries, smoking, or others. Teeth darkening can also be caused by an early childhood fever, or tetracycline medication taken when the tooth enamel was forming; this causes gray or brown bands on the teeth. In places where there is a high concentration of fluoride in the drinking water, individuals can develop bright white patches or dark brown splotches on their teeth, called mottled enamel or fluorosis. However, not all people are candidates for teeth whitening. Teeth that have been discolored from aging have the best results with the bleaching, or teeth whitening. If tooth colored resin or composite fillings are in your front teeth, they will not change color with the teeth whitening and will be very noticeable after the procedure. Check with your dentist about teeth whitening. If you are not a good candidate for the bleaching, there are alternatives such as bonding or porcelain veneers.
Options With Teeth Whitening
There are several options when whitening your teeth. Teeth whitening can be an in-office procedure, and it can involve a teeth whitening session of 60-90 minutes . With this procedure, the bleaching agent is applied to your teeth and this particular teeth whitening session is monitored by one of our skilled family dentists.
There is also an at-home procedure, where you will wear a custom-made mouthguard filled with bleaching gel. Make sure to follow the instructions from your dentist when whitening your teeth at home.
There are toothpastes that have added whitening agents, and these can be used as an adjunct to the other two procedures. In any case, there is no reason to ever suffer again from the embarrassment of discolored teeth.
