Teeth Whitening at Home: The Do’s and Don’ts from Your Lincoln Family Dentist.

Answers to 5 commonly asked questions about teeth whitening at home: We’ll tell you what you need to know!

  1. What is the best active ingredient for teeth whitening at home?

  2. Can the ingredients in teeth whitening at home products make my teeth sensitive?

  3. Will toothpaste or mouthwash help whiten my teeth?

  4. Will take-home trays, paints, and whitening strips work for fast teeth whitening at home?

  5. What are the best natural remedies for teeth whitening at home? Do they work?

The do’s and don’ts of at-home teeth whitening can vary. Some of the most common recommendations, however, are to avoid sugary and acidic foods, avoid consuming foods and drinks that stain teeth, be sure to practice good oral hygiene at home before and after whitening, and check the labels of over-the-counter teeth whitening products.

Before and after image of teeth whitening at home in Lincoln, NE.

There is no question people want a whiter smile. The unfortunate thing is that it can be pricey to have professional teeth whitening or cosmetic dentistry done. Luckily, there are other ways to get that impressive white shine on our teeth without considerable expense.

Even when the economy was down in the dumps, for example, during 2012, teeth whitening products still grew. There was a growth of 3.7% increase over the past year. If that doesn’t sound like much, think again. If we’re talking figures, try thinking $383 million. This analysis came from the IBIS World report.

To get that instant Hollywood shine; visiting the dentist to whiten your teeth is the way to go. But not everybody’s financial situation can accommodate that. So, the next option would be a home alternative or an over-the-counter teeth whitening product.

Teeth Whitener’s Number One Ingredient: Peroxide

The main bleaching ingredients that are the critical components of any teeth whitening products are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. For both types, the peroxide takes away surface stains by it bubbling away on the enamel’s surface. The more concentrated the peroxide and longer it’s been applied, the brighter and whiter your teeth will become.

So, the stronger the peroxide solution, the faster the whitening? Why not just go with 100% peroxide and call it a day?

Well, you could, but you’ll regret it. Peroxide will make your teeth sensitive. The more that’s applied, the more sensitive your teeth will be, which is no walk at the park. Besides being sensitive, if the peroxide touches the gums at all, they will start to get irritated and begin to burn. Unfortunately, that burning sensation is not just a slight tickle.

Another thing to take into account is that after the peroxide is done getting rid of the stains, it will make your teeth more susceptible to staining again up to 48 hours after treatment. So staying away from food products that gave you stains in the first place shouldn’t be consumed at that time; this means no marinara, coffee, or soda.

Try Out Some Different Kinds of Toothpaste or Mouthwash

You could check out some toothpaste and mouthwashes available at your local store. Some of them provide more peroxide than others. So, if you find the right one that works for you, you’ll start to see your teeth whiten in no time. But, don’t take flossing as something lightly. Flossing is just as important. If brushing, mouth washing, and flossing are a daily routine, healthier teeth equal a brighter smile.

Take-Home Trays, Strips, or Paint on Whiteners

Using take-home whitening trays or whitening strips could be an excellent solution to bumping up that smile whiteness. They tend to use more peroxide than mouthwashes and toothpaste. If those both don’t seem to strike your fancy, paint on whitening could be a solution to stained teeth. All three of these whitening tricks are supposed to sit on your teeth for some time. Find out what’s more comfortable for you. Just know this technique will be slower than one-day teeth whitening at a dental office.

Natural At-Home Teeth Whitening Remedies

Mixing baking soda with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide could work as a whitening solution. Make sure, however, that it touches only on your teeth, and not your gums. A more natural way to do at-home teeth whitening is something called oil pulling. Oil pulling is when you place oil such as coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around for a bit. The oil helps lift out the bacteria built up in the teeth. Keeping a teaspoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 to 30 mins could end up helping those teeth whitening results. An article posted on the Medical News Today website also offers Six Natural Ways to Whiten Teeth.

Even after reading this, you might still have questions about at-home teeth whitening in Lincoln, NE. We understand and are glad you’re curious. That means you care about your overall health and well-being, which is extremely important. So, to further help, we’ve answered a few of our most commonly asked questions:

  1. How often should you whiten your teeth at home? Your Lincoln dentist answers: The time-frame or duration between whitenings highly depends upon each individual’s sensitivity level. If sensitivity is high, we recommend 1 – 2 times per week. If sensitivity is low, whitening can be done daily for a few weeks and then tapered off to once a week or even once per month.
  2. Can you whiten your teeth at home? Your Lincoln dentist answers: Yes! There are many options for those who want to whiten their teeth at home. Most dental offices offer take-home whitening trays and gel that you can so in the comfort of your own home. Whitening strips can be purchased over-the-counter. However, those aren’t “custom fit,” so some of the gel could cause a slight chemical burn if allowed to sit on the gum tissue.
  3. How can I whiten my teeth in one day? Your Lincoln dentist answers: Whitening teeth in a day requires the professional help of a dental office. In-office whitening contains a higher percentage of gel or possibly the use of light to help increase the chances of whitening quickly.
  4. Does coconut oil whiten teeth? Your Lincoln dentist answers: The use of coconut oil will not remove intrinsic stains, but it may help prevent extrinsic stains from sticking to the outermost portion of the tooth.

We hope these frequently asked questions can help guide you when making the final decision about whitening your teeth. If you’re curious about something that you don’t see here, don’t hesitate to call our Lincoln dentists. One of our trained team members would honor the opportunity to help you.

Cosmetic Dentistry Solutions

Cosmetic Dentistry Solutions in Lincoln, NE

We’ll cover these important topics for you, so all of your cosmetic dentistry decisions are easy!

  •  Can cosmetic dentistry solutions change the shape of my teeth?

  •  Are porcelain veneers a good choice?

  •  What can dental crowns be good for?

  •  How do I go about visiting with a dentist regarding cosmetic dentistry solutions in Lincoln, NE?

How can I change the shape of my teeth?

Lincoln Nebraska dentist coddington dental cosmetic dentistry solutionsThere are many factors that determine the appearance of your teeth. Your genetics play a part in determining how large or small your teeth are, and they also help determine whether your teeth are rounded or squared-off in shape. Genetics can also affect other common dental traits, such as teeth spacing, jaw growth, etc. One of the most common cosmetic concerns we hear from our patients is regarding the shape and size of their teeth, and patients want to know how they can make a change.

For those patients who are not satisfied with their smile, we offer cosmetic dentistry solutions at Coddington Dental.

How Can Cosmetic Dentistry Solutions Change the Shape of My Teeth?

Our dentist may simply recommend reshaping and re-contouring your teeth if you only need a minor modification. This procedure is for teeth that only need slight changes. So, it is for teeth that are healthy and show no signs of decay. This procedure involves using sanding strips and dental equipment to make subtle adjustments and is relatively inexpensive compared to other cosmetic dental treatments. The gentle and slight reshaping of your teeth can leave you with a smaller smile of a more ideal shape; and the process is not uncomfortable!

When modifying the shape of your smile, it is important to consider your facial dimensions and features. Typically, females opt for a more rounded look to their teeth, while males prefer a more square look. However, our cosmetic dentists will speak with you about your specific needs and wants to give you the most optimal smile.

Porcelain Veneers and Cosmetic Dentistry in Lincoln, NE

If you need or desire a more dramatic shift in your appearance and smile, you may consider porcelain veneers or crowns. Veneers are thin, porcelain shells that are permanently applied and bonded over the front teeth. Before placing veneers, your teeth are gently prepped by your dentist. Then, your custom-made, lab-fabricated veneers will be placed on your teeth. Veneers are an excellent choice for the front teeth and on teeth with little to no decay. With just slight modifications, veneers are able to drastically improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth.

Dental Crowns and Cosmetic Dentistry in Lincoln, NE

Crowns are also used when patients desire a big change in the size and shape of their teeth. When the teeth in question are highly decayed, sustain significant biting and chewing forces, or contain existing fillings, they also are good candidates for crowns. All porcelain, tooth-colored crowns are made to treat cavities and provide support for chewing while altering the size and shape of your teeth. Cosmetic crowns can be used on both the front and back teeth.

If you are concerned that your teeth seem too small, our cosmetic dentists will evaluate your gum line as well. It is possible to reshape your gum line if you feel your teeth are “too small.” Re-sculpting the gum tissue, if you feel that your gum line covers too much of your natural tooth, our dentists can help to reveal larger teeth. This can help make your smile more aesthetically pleasing and also more fitting to your face.

If you are interested in cosmetically changing the appearance, shape, or size of your teeth, we recommend that you schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation with us. At Coddington Dental, our dentists make sure that they have a clear understanding of their patients’ goals for their cosmetic makeover.

Teeth Whitening

Interested in tooth stain removal in Lincoln, NE?
Let our Gentle Family Dentists Help You.

Here we’ll cover what we know is important:

– Why your teeth might be stained.
– Can they be whitened?
– Tooth stain removal: Will whitening remove all stains?

Why would you want to whiten your teeth? The answer is simple. Having a smile that you don’t love can negatively affect your self-esteem. Our smile can have a strong impact on our mood, and it can also change the way we function in our social and business relationships. So, many times, people consider tooth stain removal, commonly referred to as, teeth whitening.

Before and after image of tooth stain removal, also known as teeth whitening, done at Coddington Dental in Lincoln, NE.

Each patient that comes to us will be evaluated on their specific individual needs. If you find yourself interested in learning more about teeth whitening, our cosmetic dentists will learn about your personal needs and wants, to see whether or not you are a good candidate for teeth whitening. At times, stains that are found only on the surface of the teeth, can be removed with a good cleaning. However, for stains are found deeper as well as stains that are affecting the structure of the tooth, a different approach will be considered in the patient’s cosmetic makeover. Regardless, we do know that stains are unwelcome, and we will come up with a solution to help you get them removed.

What Causes Stained Front Teeth?

If you are considering tooth stain removal, also commonly referred to as teeth whitening, you may be resentful that your teeth have stains in the first place. Teeth stains can be caused for several reasons. Certain foods and drinks, like tea, coffee, grape or carrot juice, berries, or beets can cause your teeth to retain staining. If you received silver amalgam fillings years ago, they may be leaching out silver salts onto your teeth. Also, when a tooth suffers trauma or if the nerve dies, it may become dark gray in appearance because of bleeding within the tooth, or from debris within the pulp of the tooth. Finally, if you were given certain medications as a child, like Tetracycline, while teeth were forming, some teeth may have become permanently discolored. Teeth whitening is an option for stained teeth, but patients must be aware that teeth whitening cannot rectify all stained teeth. So, whether you are in search of fixing discolored teeth, a “gummy smile,” cracked or broken teeth, or even missing teeth, there is a solution for you.

Here are a few commonly asked questions to help set your mind at ease.

Is tooth stain removal, teeth whitening for everyone?

Teeth whitening, or tooth stain removal, is a comfortable and safe way to get a brilliant smile. Treatment time and results can vary depending upon the level of staining and, ultimately, the desired whiteness. Bridges, crowns, fillings, and veneers will not whiten. However, replacing amalgam fillings with white, mercury-free fillings might be an excellent option.

How old do you need to be to do teeth whitening?

It is recommended not to begin the whitening process before age 13. This may vary depending on the patient. Due to the enlarged pulp chamber in children and young adults, the nerves of the teeth can be very sensitive, and it may not be advisable.

Is it safe to whiten your teeth?

Whitening your teeth is considered safe – as long as you follow directions. Do not overuse any whitening product. The quickest way to whiten your teeth, however, is to use a professional product. A professional product contains higher amounts of bleaching reactants and is customized for your gums. Thus, making them a better choice for whitening.

Does teeth whitening work on yellow teeth?

The natural yellow tooth shades will whiten faster than a tooth with added stains from medication, tobacco, and food. Everyone has a “maximum capacity” for a particular shade of white. There are specific teeth, however, that can never get that super white color. If you desire a particular shade of white, dental veneers or crowns can help you achieve that dazzling white color.

Still have questions? That’s okay. It’s always an excellent idea to be sure you fully understand the ins and outs of any kind of treatment. For more information about teeth stains, their causes, and how you might be able to remove them, Crest™ has an article full of answers to all of your questions.

Time for Teeth Whitening?

Teeth Whitening Options

We’ll cover the basics here:

  • Why might you need to whiten your teeth?

  •  Is teeth whitening for everyone?

  •  Your teeth whitening options explained!

Some people have been blessed with a naturally white smile, but if you weren’t one of them, don’t worry, you have options. There are plenty of ways that you can brighten your smile. Let’s take a look at why you might need to whiten your teeth and what options you have.

Images of "before and after" teeth whitening. Our self-esteem has everything to do with how we perceive ourselves; how we perceive ourselves is influenced by how we look. When the color of our teeth makes us embarrassed to smile, it is probably time to get our teeth whitened, or bleached. Teeth whitening can turn your embarrassment into pride.

Teeth darken as one ages because substances get into the microcracks of the enamel, and this causes discoloration. These substances can be coffee, tea, berries, smoking, or others. Teeth darkening can also be caused by an early childhood fever, or tetracycline medication is taken when the tooth enamel was forming; this causes gray or brown bands on the teeth. In places where there is a high concentration of fluoride in the drinking water, individuals can develop bright white patches or dark brown splotches on their teeth, called mottled enamel or fluorosis. However, not all people are candidates for teeth whitening. Teeth that have been discolored from aging have the best results with bleaching, or teeth whitening. If the tooth-colored resin or composite fillings are in your front teeth, they will not change color with the teeth whitening and will be very noticeable after the procedure. Check with your dentist about teeth whitening. If you are not a good candidate for bleaching, there are alternatives such as bonding or porcelain veneers.

Options With Teeth Whitening in Lincoln, NE

There are several options when whitening your teeth. Teeth whitening can be done as an in-office procedure, and it involves a teeth whitening session of 60-90 minutes. With this procedure, the bleaching agent is applied to your teeth and this particular teeth whitening session is monitored by one of our skilled family dentists.

There is also an at-home procedure, where you will wear a custom-made mouthguard filled with a bleaching gel. Make sure to follow the instructions from your dentist when whitening your teeth at home.

There are kinds of toothpaste that have added whitening agents, and these can be used as an adjunct to the other two procedures. In any case, there is no reason to ever suffer again from the embarrassment of discolored teeth.

If you have any questions about the teeth whitening process, or to see if you are a candidate, you can call or email us with any questions. If you feel whitening might not work for you, we also offer a wide variety of cosmetic procedures that would surely help you get your smile just the way you want it. Either way, our family dentists would love to help you!
